That large smooth flat oval seed you received is a Brazilian Fern Tree (Schizolobium parahyba). Sometimes also called Yellow Jacaranda, it blooms in April at the same time as the Purple Jacaranda. It is one the fastest growing trees, recommended for creating a quick tropical affect and as a great substitute for tree ferns that can be slow growing. Schizolobiums are native from Belize to Brazil. They naturally thrive in areas with a pronounced dry season, that influences the flowering intensity. The tree in the picture above left is three years old from seed planted directly into the ground by my son.

How to germinate the seed

I have already scarified the seed. Scarifying is the process of nicking the seeds so it will germinate quickly.

First , soak the seed over night or at least four hours. The seed will swell and become much larger. Secondly, plant the seed (nicked side up) in well-draining potting soil and in at least a ten inch or three gallon container. Or you plant directly in the ground, as seen the image above. Finally, water it, stand back and watch it grow.

Enjoy!
